within the Catholic Church which honored St. Valentine. It was first celebrated on February 14 when
Pope Gelasius I declared the feast day in 498. There is a belief that the Pope declared the feast day
to counter the Roman festival of Lupercalia which allowed men and women to pair off as lovers by
